anyone know a scrap collector ?
I'm doing a ethnic clear out of my shed and green house in preparation for the spring and I'm chucking out a good collection of scrap metal that I'm gonna take to the tip but, If there's someone who collects it and makes a few bob on the side, he is welcome to it , There used to be loads o tranny vans doing the ole ' RAG BONE' thing but laws and fuel prices have pushed most out of business,

"I'm doing a ethnic clear out"
An ethnic clear out Tom?
Hitler
Mugabe
Milosevic
Pol Pot
Putin.....and many more fanatics, despots and dictators over the last couple of hundred years
Upshot of the actions of those named above was millions of lost lives
Are you attempting to be funny?
Or are you that ignorant you don't know the meaning of the term?
Either way shouldn't you be showing a bit of respect?
Howabout just saying something like......¬"I am getting rid of all the sh*** out of my shed, first come first served"

Hi tomplum,
I don't know of a scrap man who collects. I live in Orrell and we just leave scrap at the end of our drives which is always collected. It's just a normal facility here but I'm not sure if it's anywhere in the Borough.

JR, getting rid of, or collecting, scrap metal is nothing to do with the council.
Replied: 23rd Feb 2024 at 23:16
Just do as JR says leave it at the end of the drive, the scrap men will be scrapping over it.

Tonker, I don't think JR was saying it was anything to do with the council.
I live in Pemberton and, like JR, any scrap metal we have will be collected by independent scrap merchants if left in a place accessible to them.
Tom, look up scrap merchants in your area. Mrs Google will help.

Tom the scrap people can smell profit for miles and are around even at this time of day. Just leave it on your drive and it will go in no time.Make sure they don't load up that red Fiat by mistake

Thanks all , yes I know the scrap men indeed have a sixth sense for detecting scrap iron, In my working life as a plumber they followed us about like the remoras follows a shark but, They are now rare and I don't want to spoil sledges view of my movements by making an obstruction so , Ill keep an eye out for tranny flat bed and make some arrangement with him/her to pick it up,
Thanks all ( well most of you}

Tonker. I wasn't referring to the Council. I should have mentioned that they are scrap men in pickup trucks who collect it.

Tom, we're the same as the others. Just leave it out at the front , in a safe place then the ' where there's a blame ' men don't get involved. A day or so later, Metal Micky has usually spotted it and done the removal for you. They even knocked on the door once and asked permission to have a scope through a builders skip we had on the front. They nearly emptied it !!

Did you put a sign on it saying -
"scrap collectors from within the borough only"!
Then again, what self-respecting scrao collector would operaste "ouytsaaaaide o't'borough, raaaaaight"?

No Tommy mostly mild steel bit o cast, bit o S/S and a bit of brass, Not worth the price of diesel it would cost to get to Caulderbanks but, These collectors pick up bits here theer and everywhere and when their van is full. They'll probably get £150 -200 for a van full depending what metal it is and how much the van will carry,

when I was pluming for a living, scrap was a little perk that we had and, it was important to sort it proper
A plumbers perk

Tommy:
I don't think putting a few items of metal on your own drive is classed as Fly Tipping. I'd have thought it would mean transporting it elsewhere and just dumping it to create an eyesore and a potential danger to others and animals.
Tom:
Glad to hear your stuff got cleared away. You know what to do in future.
